Model Making: playing with textures and brick patterns

Updated: Nov 24, 2022

During this weeks model making session, we explored making brick patterns from textured recycled materials using Polly filler. We firstly covered pieces of recycled card at different thicknesses in Polly filler before sticking on brick pattern templates onto the card. Using a scalpel we then cut round these using the correct scale and assembled them to make the specified brick pattern of cobbled brick. There are two parts to the brick- The Header and The stretcher. When sticking these down, we had to make sure that they were in the correct place. Brick walls can have two types of thicknesses- double and single depending on the type of building and the use of the brick. This technique will come in useful in future model making practices when creating brick textures.

After, to show the texture of the brick, we used the technique of dry brushing- fully coating the brick patterns in one paint colour and letting it dry before using a dry paintbrush and gently coating the texture in another colour to highlight the grooves and the cracks. I used the colours blue and red however I feel colours that have more of a contrast in light and dark might be more useful when trying to show the different textures. I will take note of this for next time.
