Here is my Skills Passport final outcome:
I thoroughly enjoyed the process of creating the cage and Wizard elements especially working with worbla- a material I explored throughout mixed material workshops. One of the changes I made to my original concept drawings was adding the rose and Fairylights as I felt the overall finished product needed more depth and tonal contrast. Overall I am very happy with the finished product and I think it would work well in a Wizard or Witch film set, inspired by Harry Potter.
What worked well:
My favourite element is the spell book due to the level of detail added.
I feel the painting technique of dry brushing worked really well to create the distressed look.
My overall outcome resembles my initial design thought process and I was able to overcome the structural difficulties.
What would I improve:
Adding more tonal contrast between the different artefact elements as they are all brown.
Making a larger cage door to make it overlap the sides of the cage so that it could securely fasten.
To make the cage door open so that the book and wand can be easily accessed even though it is only for show.
Hiding the battery pack inside the book
Challenges I overcame:
To add more contrast, I added a red rose in line with the fairytale Wizard theme along with fairy lights to highlight the different metal textures.
To make the cage more sturdy I used 3 wooden circles along with doubling up the worbla strips and adding steel wire inside to create durable cage walls.
I found that when i added the book and wand to the cage, they slipped through the gaps and therefore to overcome this, I added a wooden base that I made using recycled wood and a saw.
