I started by making the book as seen in the slides below. I used a hard cardboard box and shaped it into a book that opened with a spine. Following this, I then added texture including wrapping paper, laser cut wooden pieces and coffee stained vintage style newspapers. I then painted the book with browns and metallics to look distressed and worn.

Next I made the wand, again using a mixture of materials from previous skills passport workshops. I found a branch from the garden that resembled a wand and wrapped worbla plastic around it to make it look like the wand shape. I then painted the wand as well as adding texture through different gems and applying leftover pieces of worbla. I then painted the wand in a similar style to the book.

The final process of making my artefact was creating the cage. This was by far the largest structure of the artefact and therefore the hardest. I found it challenging to support the structure and therefore through trial and error, I was able to create the cage by applying 3 wooden circle support structures along with doubling up worbla strips and attaching steel wire in-between. Once I had made the structure, I painted it to look like a rustic metal/leather that has been around for centuries.
