Model making: making chairs

We made two different types of chairs as seen below:

  • one hand-made

  • one laser cut

To start off the session we were asked to individually create our own chair in the scale of 1:20 as chairs can depict the narrative of the story. We looked at how different chairs can represent different eras and the setting. I decided to create almost a garden chair with square/right-angle joints as seen in the red chair images above. I used a mixture of mountboard to create the base using the general reference of the chair height being 450mm. I then took a piece of foamboard and cut it to the right size, slicing off the top hard layer to leave almost a cushion like appearance. I used this layer to add texture to my chair before painting it red. I feel like it worked well as a concept overall however if given longer than half an hour, I would have explored more of an intricate in depth design as well as creating a neater overall finish.

Next we put together a pre-laser cut chair using PVA glue in the scale of 1:50. This chair was very intricate and fiddley and next time I feel it would be easier to use tweezers when putting the chair together. I hope to use the process of laser cutting when creating props, especially chairs as I feel it is much more efficient and less time consuming. After, following industry protocol, I created a box to place each chair into which would allow them to be protected not only in transport but to make sure they get delivered to the right destination. However I ran out of time to fully secure this chair in PVA glue meaning it isn't as sturdy as it could be. This is something I can finish at home.
