During this mixed materials session, we were each given a sheet of plastazote each which we had to stencil different shapes with different edges to experiment how we can use different joining techniques to glue them together.
Plastazote us a foam based thermoplastic which is lightweight that needs to be glued with contact adhesive and primed before painting. To do this we used the spray booth to remove all toxic smells and chemicals to make it safer to work with. I then went onto experiment making a piece of armour out of this material however due to time constraints and numbers allowed in the spray booth at once, I wasn't able to glue this together and therefore I will complete this in my own time.
I really enjoyed this exercise and can see how practitioners in the industry use this material to replicate existing objects as a cheaper and more efficient alternative especially if they need to be duplicated.
When making my objects, I found that the sheet with a curve was the hardest to join as the glue wasn't dry enough and so as the material began to curve upwards, the two sides began to pull away from each other. To overcome this I need to leave the glue for slightly longer so that the adhesive sticks. However the other pieces worked perfectly well.
