Viewing: 'West Side Memories' 2003 Documentary

Updated: Oct 4, 2023

Documentary Review:

I really enjoyed watching the documentary West Side Memories however I believe that it is a bit too short at 55 minutes. Its numerous participants cover several topics of interest to the original film fans in particular the dubbing of lead singing voices. However, I found parts a little bit dull as they couldn't get George Chakiris to participate and therefore as spectators with an interest and passion for the film, we are only listening to a lot of information from the same people such as the two gang members. However, it is still worth seeing to gain a better understanding of the film.

As the film progresses, we learn about the collaborative process that brought the show to life on stage along with the particular demands faced by the producers in adapting it from stage to screen. I found this fascinating to learn about as a set designer as it may be a future problem I may encounter in my career within the industry, Similarly it was fascinating to discover that the film was directed by two men. Broadway directors Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise.

One of my favourite things I learned as the viewer was that Natalie Wood was not always dubbed and that we actually hear her high-school soprano renditions of 'I feel Pretty' and 'Tonight'. Furthermore, the fact that Russ Tamblyn was dubbed in the opening 'Jet Song' which I found shocking to hear as a spectator.

Overall I believe it is an okay documentary on the making of 'West Side Story' as it includes some of the original actors and directors however I feel as though it could portray a more rounded and in-depth view of the film including more of the original cast.
