Viewing: Strictly Ballroom (1992)

The film is a cross between Astaire and Rodgers with Mickey and Judy, reminding me of comedy in the form of a docudrama about competitive ballroom dancing in Australia.

I feel this film was chaotic, especially with the overuse of wide-angle shots in which I felt it was hard to keep up with the characters along with too many storylines. However, Luhrmann is just a first-time director and therefore it is understandable.

My favourite part about the movie is the chaos as the characters and director can be seen to care about nothing apart from ballroom dancing. All they talk about is ballroom dancing. Their costumes also suggest that they live in a world of ballroom dancing- with little contact with the outside world. As an audience member, we can assume that they are frightened of change and don't know how to cope with it and therefore live in a fantasy world of rules and traditions.
