Viewing: One From The Heart (1981)

Updated: Dec 6, 2023

I really enjoyed the overall storyline and plot of this film, however, I feel as though it was an overdirected and overproduced style of film. The use of too many colours, saturation, sounds, and neon signs to create a fake interpretation of Las Vegas that looks and feels dated for the time.

The movie was filmed mostly on a sound stage, and Coppola makes no effort to replicate reality; you can almost see the paint strokes on the scenery. But it does allow him the flexibility of creating intricate shots, making bold lighting choices, and employing rapturous colour palettes. The soundtrack is also very specific yet couldn't be smoother. There isn't enough meat here, for this movie to truly work – with both the characters and plot being secondary to style.

On the other hand, it could be viewed as A beautifully filmed and well-acted romantic film with wonda erful music score and songs from Tom Waits. The music score really contributes perfectly to create "dreamy" mood of the film, it feels like a dream wondering through studio night Las Vegas probably as false as the real Las Vegas itself.

Overall, I feel like it is a movie that you either love or hate and something you have to watch to make up your own mind.
