Context behind the film:

nearly 95 years old
After studying A level film studies, I have a strong understanding and awareness of German Expressionism a key concept present throughout the film 'Metropolis'. I particularly enjoyed watching the enormous sets to reflect the chaos of the city and the divide between the two lovers.
The special effects were outstanding for the time period as they were able to make a robot figure appear to come to life. Some of my favourite visuals of the film include the train bridge floating across the futuristic city and the double exposure overlays to convey the vast contrast between the working class and the city planners.
I really enjoyed the storyline and the concept behind the film as I feel it conveyed a prevailing message within society at the time and how there was a whole other world beneath the wealthy- one that should be equally valued and recognised as in some respects they were the driver of todays found society.
This will be useful to further my knowledge and understanding within future contextual studies and the course as a whole as I can see how film designers construct a set to convey hidden meanings open to the audiences own interpretation.
