We visited The Emmerdale set and got to explore the Art Department office along with the different sets where Emmerdale is filmed. It was exciting getting to follow the process from research and ideas, to mood boards, dressing and studio plan devoted to the character ideation.
When looking round the sets, I found it fascinating to consider the different shapes, architecture, scale of the set and set decoration as well as different angles and graphics. All of these features helped enhance the sets to create depth and layers visible to the camera to create an atmospheric scene for the audience and viewers. I also loved getting to witness behind the scenes in the construction department seeing the scenic painters and artists bring the sets to life.
Further into the tour, we also got to see the props department which made filming more sustainable and efficient rather than hiring and by props from prop stores. I really enjoyed seeing the wide variety of props on offer and how each prop mirrors individual characters and the change in narrative of the storyline.
Overall, I really enjoyed this trip and even more so feel excited to work in this industry even more after seeing the sets come to life after the design process. I felt that the whole studio had a very positive and collaborative atmosphere and it was clear to see everyone thoroughly enjoyed there job. I could definitely see myself working there in the future and would recommend the trip to other aspiring set designers willing to work in the film and television industry.
