Viewing: Hair 1979

After watching this film, one thing that really stood out to me were the songs:

  • The glory of "Hair"

  •  "Let the Sun Shine In"

  •  "Age of Aquarius"

  • "Black Boys/White Boys."

However, compared to the original music, the film version adds a story that works extremely well with it. Along with incredibly beautiful choreography by Twyla Tharp and photography. Another thing that also stood out to me was how the movie also evokes the stylistic artifacts of the flower-power time. The love of beads and vests and headbands and fringed jackets and all the other styles were amazing elements of the film and helped bring the hippie culture back to life when watching it. It helps remind the audience of the conflicts in lifestyles, mostly strikingly in scenes between the young black man who has joined the hippies, and the mother of his child, whom he left behind- one of which is my favorite part of the film as it adds a sense of heartfelt emotion. As much as I enjoyed watching this film, it isn’t probably one I would pick to watch again as musicals aren’t really my thing however it is definitely worth a watch to explore the amazing choreography and the hippie culture.
