I went to see this film in the Cinema on the big screen to help fully immerse myself into the film. I was captivated by the dated set design and how clean, slick and precise everything was. It almost felt other-worldly as it was a simulation the perfect reality, I feel that the films set design fully reflects this as everything seemed 'perfect'- tidy, slick and clean and the characters within the set interacted with this perception.
I feel like the film follows a predictable narrative as I foreshadowed how the film was going to end but nevertheless it was thoroughly enjoyable but also a little bit strange as we weren't fully aware that they were living in a simulation of reality even though we predicted it.
The film is set in a 50s utopia in California where Alice spends her days in a mundane domestic bliss while her husband goes off to work in the top-secret headquarters. It is an idealised version of a world that these people want for themselves however something is clearly off which Olivia Wilde clearly communicates through the soundtrack and set design something that will be useful to interpret and understand for future use in my career in set design.
