Viewing: Destino

Today we viewed Disney's Destino- Disney's take on surrealism. I really enjoyed watching this short film and how different elements of surrealism seamlessly blended into one another to create a mesmerising image for the spectator. It was clear to see how the designers have been influenced by the surrealist art movement through shifting shapes and releasing the unbridled imagination of the subconscious. It almost reminded me of a weird dream where your mind bounces between different scenarios and states.

The eyes seen in one of the images above remind me of other Disney characters seen in monsters ink.

In 1945, Disney and Salvador Dali decided to create a short film together. Disney found that they in fact did not own Dali's sketches and paintings that he had created in the studio in 1940s however the contract stipulated that if Disney made and released the film they would. I loved how they were inspired my morphism to tell the tragic love story of the personification of time who falls in love with a mortal woman as the two float across the surrealist landscapes of Dali's paintings.

Studying and understanding the concept of surrealism and witnessing it come to life through film is helpful in relation to my future contextual studies and own research project as I am able to dive into the history behind surrealism and how such a significant art movement can have such a significant impact on a large company such as Disney.
