Viewing: American Graffiti 1973

I really enjoyed watching this film as it‘s like a film I have never seen before as it is mainly set in cars and the drive through diner. However I felt that towards the end this film became slightly repetitive as there was little change of set and was mainly conversations held in the students cars.

one of the things I found fascinating about this film was how the majority of it was set in the cars with very little set design as it is mainly based on location. One of my favourite things about the film is how we explore the different characters personalities and texture of the culture onscreen and time period such as the clothes and hairdos, the details of the cars of the hot rod culture, the waitresses roller skating the food out to the busy drive-in patrons. It all plays to a jukebox soundtrack of 50s and early 60s hits emanating from the AM radio that every single car in town is tuned to, with Wolfman Jack himself deejaying the journey.

My favourite scene of the film is when Milner gets stuck babysitting a 12-year-old girl while the others find themselves out of their league girls which is kind of ironic as he is known for being with gorgeous women. The scenes of those two in the car is comedic as she has full control over him and in the end he begins to care for her as if she is his own sister, however, he is terrified of ruining his own reputation.

The scenes in and out of the drive through diner are aesthetically pleasing as the set is captivating and exciting. I love the choice of the colour palette along with the curved shape and buzzing atmosphere with the waitresses rolling on roller skates drowned out by the music. I would love to work on a set like this inspired by this time period set in the 60s.
