After watching this film, I believe it takes great bravery to write a film almost entirely about yourself, capturing the good and bad of your life story and then portraying it on the big screen for millions to see. His self-destructive urges become painful to watch in places. It is a bold way to present the story to an American audience typically hooked on realism.
Another aspect that really stood out to me while watching the film was the editing. The entire picture is cut sharply and joined with a particular sense of rhythm. Every beat is crisp and in time portraying the directors' musical background in theatre. The cinematography in this movie also deserves recognition between the soft focus lens used perfectly for scenes with Angelique along with the surreal and nightmarish sets created through the use of mirrors. The repeated shots portray a chaotic perspective, which fits perfectly in the chaos of the protagonist's life and mind creating the perfect pace.
I would thoroughly recommend watching this film as it has been more than 40 years since its release and yet it still feels vital in American cinema.
