After viewing Newstead Abbey, the setting and location of dark rooms and intricate pieces of furniture, it reminded me of the Tim Burton 'Alice in Wonderland' film which I saw when it first came out.
I am really fascinated by the mystical and elaborate set designs which exaggerate almost a darker, evil atmosphere that doesn't necessarily appeal to a younger audience like the original fairy tale intends to do. I particularly like the Mad Hatter's tea party scene and the design of the Queen of Hearts castle as it captures her personality clearly demonstrated throughout. This is something I intend to demonstrate throughout my work and our group project for Newstead Abbey- taking a characters imagery and persona and reflecting it onto the set.
I felt as though one of the main intentions of this film was to make it a sort of nightmare rather than a dream wonderland, not necessarily through a child's eyes as it offers elements of horror and cruelty towards certain individuals and characters as well as being extremely graphic in certain areas e.g. removing the eyeball from a beast.
Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this version of Alice in Wonderland and Tim Burton's take on the film as well as the graphic designs and greenscreens used throughout- something I hope to work on in the future.
