From 1939 to 1945, Britain was at war. On the home front, towns and cities were being bombed by the German air force.
There were shortages of food and fuel as ships bringing vital supplies across the Atlantic were sunken by enemy U-boats. The threat of invasion loomed.
Overseas, British and Allied Sailors, soldiers and airmen were fighting on many fronts against German, Italian and Japanese forces.
In my mood board, I chose images that reflect the living space of the time focusing on the muted colour palette of browns and greens as well as the furniture and aesthetic. Since the project is set around living spaces, I looked particularly at Living rooms and bedrooms as they illustrate a clear image of life at the time as this is where most people would have spent their time. It was almost an art deco theme from the 1930s.
The family would have kept the same furniture and decoration throughout the war because furniture like everything else was in short supply. The focus of the room was the fireplace, and the open coal fire was the main source of heat when the room would have been cosy and warm when the fire was alight, however fuel was in short supply during the war time and a fuel saving scheme was introduced in 1942 which encouraged household has not used their fire at all in the summer months and to turn off the lights when not necessary. Children would use the living room or sitting room as a play area rather than their bedrooms during wartime.
