For our 2nd project on the course so far, we have been asked to work in collaboration with other students for the Newstead Abbey Live project which involves creating a group installation based on the theme of Alice in Wonderland with a Christmas twist. We are working alongside students from Design for theatre and live performance to enhance our skills and knowledge.
As a group, during our first session, we discussed multiple themes and ideas centred around the Alice in Wonderland narrative, not only exploring general ideas but also themes in closer detail. In my group each of us went onto research a particular theme individually which would then be discussed at our next meeting to decide our finalised idea and move onto making sketches and concept designs.
The themes we discussed as a group included when Alice grew to big in the white rabbits house, The Mad Hatter's hat making workshop, White roses and Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Personally I researched The White Rabbits house idea as I found playing around with scale fascinating however collectively as a group we have decided to continue the development of the Mad Hatter's hat making workshop.
Ideas thought of so far at this stage of development:
- Culturally significant: see V&A’s Alice Legacy exhibition
- Market open for young + mature audiences. Disney, Horrible Histories, Burton
- Films (Franchise and standalone) 1903 - present day. All explore a range of mediums incl. Animation (written and stop-motion), Live-action and fusion. Experimental by design.
- Games (Alice: Madness returns, 2010 Alice in Wonderland Burton tie-in game)
- Books, Documentaries and Articles.
