Viewing: Citizen Kane

Updated: May 21, 2023

A group of reporters are trying to decipher the last word ever spoken by Charles Foster Kane, the millionaire newspaper tycoon: "Rosebud." The film begins with a news reel detailing Kane's life and then viewers are shown flashbacks from Kane's life. As the reporters investigate further, the viewers see a display of a fascinating man's rise to fame, and how he eventually fell off the top of the world.

When watching the film, I feel that the storyline is fairly simple even though the plot unfolds by jumping in and out of nonlinear flashbacks which is surprisingly easy to keep track of. However the relatively fast pace of the story are what make the film appear intimidating because there isn't any standstill. There were too many scenes where the dialog seemed pointless, as well, I think. It didn't seem to be leading to anything. However, this criticism is so minor, due to the ending more than making up for it along with the excellent cinematography and editing skills. I would thoroughly recommend watching this film to experience some amazing visual experiences in cinema.

The movie is a visual masterpiece, a combination of daring angles and images that had never been attempted before, and has never been equalled since. Toland perfected a deep-focus technique that allowed him to photograph backgrounds with as much meanings as foregrounds There's also an extremely effective low-angle shot late in the film where Kane trashes Susan's room to highlight the power and authority to the viewer.
