One of the requirements for our BBC3 design Project brief, was to create a technical drawing. These drawings help various people and departments within studios to visualise and build sets, giving them a sense of space and scale.
When first starting technical drawing, I found the initial concept hard to wrap my head around for example working out the different line meanings and actually fitting the set, the audience and space for the cameras in.
Using a drafting board, I traced over the initial studio outline, adding my own design elements in. Aspects of the design we had to consider included:
4 metres must be kept around each part of the set to allow for fire exits etc
Arrows indicate doorways, entrances and exits
Nothing should be drawn free hand- A template should always be used- I found this particularly challenging when drawing circles.
Bold thick lines indicate solid lines
Hatched lines are where the camera can't see
Dashed lines show items/objects hanging/ not touching the floor
Doors must show what way they open up
Next time I will improve the thickness and darkness of the lines use as well as practicing lettering. Some of the materials I used included masking tape, French curves, scale ruler, technical pencils and tracing paper along with the drafting board.
