As part of research for our future Alice in Wonderland design brief, we visited Newstead Abbey to get an ideal feel of sense of space, sense of era and overall general concept ideas for our next project. Newstead Abbey is an ideal location for filming, exhibition space, museum and a fun day out.
I really enjoyed walking around the historic location and taking in what life could have been like. When walking round, we were asked to take into account the current fixtures such as light fittings and certain hanging objects as well as not being able to drill holes into the wall. All of which will need to be considered and taken into account when designing the next project which will be a hard but great problem solving challenge.
When walking round, certain aspects that really stood out to me were the darker lit rooms and closed curtains as too much sunlight has the potential to damage fragile paintings and period wallpapers. Similarly lots of areas were out of bound due to fragile pieces of furniture which could not be moved due to risk of breaking. A similar idea applies to certain objects which could not be touched and so they were placed within a glass frame.
Another design consideration to take into account is the period elements of the old building and how it can be considered from a child's point of view to make it a captivating experience for all of the family when designing The Alice in Wonderland design brief.
