For this project, we were required to choose one of the proposed classic interior sets from the given films and draw up accurate technical drawings of the set. We were then asked to create visuals of our reimagined set in a different time period and genre.
I really enjoyed creating the moodboards to express my thought process and colour schemes as well as gathering inspiration for my set.
I decided to go with the Asteroid hitting earth as the reason for my dystopian set. I would use the asteroid as a power surge to source the house/set with electricity along with all the robots. I felt as though this was really fitting for a sci-fi genre and could be believable.
I took inspiration from an existing building on NTU campus. It made me want to include a green wall in my own design but adapt it in keeping with my sci-fi concept.
I then created a 3D Vectorworks model of my set followed by the technical drawing.
I really enjoyed creating this visual and had fun with the colour and light variations to try and make this already futuristic house even more modern. I really liked the pink tones as it added almost a warm element for such a cold setting.
I then went on to create visuals of the other different rooms to allow the director a choice of where they would want to film. If I had the opportunity to redesign the visuals, I would make sure the characters appear more in perspective and add characters to all of my visuals.
To create the model I used a mixture of cutting white card along with laser cutting to make sure the window panes were neat and precise. When taking photos of the model, I used red lighting to make it appear ominous and sinister from the bombed surroundings from the asteroid. If I was to revisit the model, I would ensure that I add a figure to add a sense of scale to the design. I would also perhaps consider changing the location of the stairs.
I then added a backing of what the surroundings may look like from the asteroid. I was overall really happy with the visual aesthetic of my design.
I used twin motion for the first time from my Vectorworks model to try and recreate my set. I liked how realistic the set looked and how it bought it to life. One thing I would do next time is add a ceiling to my design to make sure the only light source is coming from the windows and interior lighting.
From my feedback asteroid it was suggested to create a visual of the film as a whole maybe considering where the asteroid had hit earth and the power station it now powers. This is something I would like to consider if I have time during my portfolio week at the end of term.
